My (Advancing) Newbie Difficulty Rating: Moderate

How cute is that! Well, there is that nostalgic factor that got me to buy this. Collage designs are not really my thing, but this one was orderly, pretty easy to sort by color, should be fun, right?

Not so much — good idea from Lego to feature their product in jigsaw puzzles, given the growth of their popularity. Execution of same unfortunately had several quality issues.

Quality: The bad: loose piece fit, broken, bent, splitting pieces, poor color match of picture to pieces. Also the round cans are a bit oval, perhaps due to resizing the original photo to fit the puzzle measurements. All the pieces were the same two in, two out piece shape, so the only clue was the pieces would repeat from horizontal to vertical. All of that made a relatively straight forward puzzling experience a lot less satisfying.

The good: Fairly small box that contained a poster and the pieces, which were in a resealable zipper lock bag. Little puzzle dust was found. There were no missing pieces.

Construction: Find the edge pieces and sort by color. The sorting was tricky due to poor color match. I built the frame and sub sorted out the pieces that were just turquoise, the shadow pieces, the metal rims that had only turquoise, the rims that had only shadow, and the shadow areas.  I was left with several beige pieces that perhaps were brush handle and stir stick parts, or parts of the whitish or beige paints. I started by filling the “paints”.  The two red ones were almost indistinguishable, I left those fills for last. After that, I filled in the turquoise in the bottom rows and other random spots, then the other rim parts, and finally the dark shadows.

As evident from my sorting, this puzzle had more parts than one might assume at first glance. I still think, at best, I could say it was almost easy. I worked on it over 4 days. I sorted it one evening and finished it over the next three days. Yes, I’m slow but I took a lot of breaks. I was highly annoyed that it had so many quality issues. Still, I saw progress, and had fun realizing that!

This is totally on me, but something you might also experience. I had legitimate reasons not to like Paint Party, but it was bigger than that. The puzzle I completed right before this one was a truly beautiful illustration I really loved doing. It was very difficult, perhaps the most challenging one so far. I enjoyed every single minute I worked on it. I went to my hand picked stash to select the next one — I didn’t really want to do any of them. Oh boy, that was bad. None of them could top the previous joy of puzzling I had just experienced. I simply did not want to do the work. It would just be a chore. So I picked one that looked colorful and simple.

It took me a while to get my head and heart back in order. I love puzzling. It is the best hobby I have ever chosen. I love getting lost in the effort, clearing my head, finding calm and peace in the process. I’m back now — here to stay!

My grades: Quality C-, fun factor B
