My Confident Newbie Difficulty Rating: Historically Easy

Boston is stepped in history. That’s the Old North Church, and the iconic statue of Paul Revere. I just spent quite a bit of time reading various accounts of “Paul Revere’s Ride.” There is simply too much to share here, but I will let you in on one lesser known fact . . .

For some, the midnight ride conjures images of Paul Revere riding through the night, shouting out, "The British are coming! The British are coming!" But this phrase would have made no sense to the colonists; everyone at that time thought of themselves as British. Instead, Revere spread his message subtly by saying, "The Regulars are coming." The troops were known as Regulars, Redcoats or The King's Men. The troops called the colonists country people, provincials, Yankees, peasants or rebels.

I found that piece of history interesting. I also find 100 piece puzzles interesting. They are clearly a simple way to fit some puzzling into almost any day. It may seem too easy, but any amount of time engaged in the puzzling process affords the same result, clearing the mind and offering peace and calm.

Quality: Almost perfect! Loose piece fit was the only minus; with only 100 pieces, not much of a bother. The sturdy, little, travel size box has the full image on the top. Color match to the pieces was excellent. Inside was a sealed bag of pieces. There was no puzzle dust. The solid pieces have very low sheen. No pieces were damaged and none were missing.

Getting started: find the edge pieces and sort by color. I turned all the pieces face up on my small board, pulled the edge pieces out and arranged the rest by color.

Construction: I built the frame and filled in the illustration starting with BOSTON. The frame offered a lot of color information; the build was stress free, completed easily and quite a bit of fun.

Final thoughts: Just a bit more on 100 piece and lower piece count puzzles. They seem to be everywhere now, from long standing brands to the newer companies that emerged in the last few years. Even the highest end ($$$$) brands are carrying them. They are a perfect beginning for new puzzlers, but I truly believe they have a place for seasoned puzzlers. And, as the one featured here suggests, many designs are themed to appeal to adults. There’s vintage, historic places, major cities, landmarks, state parks, vehicles, food, and so much more. There are also many that appeal to the kid in all of us - cereal boxes, cartoon characters, Disney, et al. The Mini collection from New York Puzzle Company is a great place to start!
