Sunset Hill Farm puzzle

I did this Jacarou puzzle (Sunset Hill Farm) months ago. I totally enjoyed it, and would have rated it easy to moderate even though I was very new to puzzling. It had my favorite puzzling element - larger areas of similar color. I sorted it by color, and sub-sorted out the small side pics, the flowers, the sun, and probably the horns, eyes, nose and the tail.

So, when I decided to do this one, I expected it would be a similar build. Um, not so much. It had nothing to do with puzzle quality. Let me get to that now. Excellent! Bright colors. The sturdy pieces have a smooth finish with a bit of sheen. Correct pieces just drop in where they belong. I could pick up the completed puzzle off the table by its sides and it didn’t break, clearly a tight fit. And, no damaged or missing pieces. There was no additional poster, but the box pic displays the full scene with an excellent color match. One little niggle — the puzzle is cut slightly smaller all around than the pic on the box. So, watch out for that when building the frame. A nice touch - the pieces come in a resealable bag for storing. I am quite taken with this artist’s bold artwork, strongly featured in the JaCaRou collection.

Back to this puzzle - Yes, I followed the puzzling mantra, find the edge pieces and sort by color. Then I built the frame and sub sorted, as best I could, the roof, the flowers, the whitish area by their edge colors, the windows and door, the rooster parts with dots, the rooster’s belly, legs and feet, and the combo red, yellow, blue pieces of the roosters tail. Call me super sorter. I don’t even really enjoy sorting, but for me, it makes the construction much more satisfying and hopefully a lot of fun!

So, why moderate to hard? I started with the flowers — it took forever! There were still holes in all of them when I decided to switch to the barn. My favorite, so I was feeling at least accomplished at that point. Seeing progress, I carried on. I gave the rooster a face. By then, I was just having fun. Last to complete was the rooster’s tail, which also took some time. Placing that last piece brought a big smile.

This was not an easy puzzle! If I had tried it as a brand new puzzler, I would have been totally discouraged. I’ve been at this now for 8 months. Confidence has a lot to do with perseverance. I’m still slow, but I really don’t mind that. And yes, I reference the picture. I’ve learned a lot about puzzling, and about myself. This is a personal activity. One I have truly enjoyed since I decided I needed a new hobby. So this review reflects my style. Maybe you think it makes sense or maybe you take a different approach. The benefits are universal — lost in the process, totally calm, clear minded and at peace. It is such a good thing!

My grades: Quality - A+, Fun Factor A+
