Holy cow! I am going to get personal here, even more than I usually do. I don’t remember when exactly I got this puzzle gifted to me by Jf Hennessy at Hennessy Puzzles, but I know that it was at some point during the pandemic. Profound apologies to Jeff, but I found myself suffering from a case of COVID depression, and part of my depression was a lack of motivation to do almost anything, including puzzling. I thought that it was pretty ironic that I was not puzzling when it seemed like the rest of the world couldn’t puzzle fast enough. But I really felt obligated to do this puzzle. I even brought it in the bedroom right next to my side of the bed, in hopes that I could miraculously start puzzling again, but I had lost my puzzle mojo.

My impetus came, very slightly, on International Puzzle Day, January 29th, 2022. I actually got out my puzzle boards and opened this colorful puzzle. Almost holding my breath, I studied the box carefully and decided to start with the big round sun/moon (?) face in the upper right corner. I got maybe 75 pieces put together before I stopped. I carefully packed away my puzzle to protect it from my 6 cats, and fully expected to get back to my puzzle the following day.

Well, that next day came and went, but I just couldn’t get myself to bring my puzzle board out again to work on it again. I could see my puzzle board every day, waiting patiently for me, even glaring at me for my neglect. One day became another, then another, and then a week went by. Followed by another week. And one more week for good measure. But….my miracle happened on February 20th. It didn’t come with bells or whistles or balloons or cake, but it came quietly, privately, peacefully. I was afraid to tell everyone about it in case that jinxed my progress.

I brought my puzzle board back out at 1:39 pm and puzzled until almost 8:00 that night. Sure, I took a break to cook and eat dinner for my family, but I had gotten some real puzzling done! Not just token puzzling, but some honest-to-gosh REAL puzzling! Was this another temporary state of affairs? I really can’t tell you. But I did get my puzzle board back out the next day and the next one after that, and then one more final day when I put in my very last piece. I had done it! I put a puzzle together alone! I have to mention the “alone” part, because my mojo was only absent when I wasn’t visiting Mom. A therapist might be able to provide some insight into this strange occurrence, but I am grateful that I could at least do what I love whenever I was with my precious mom. But I did it! I puzzled 4 days in a row! And then I took a 2 day break before opening up another puzzle. Fingers crossed, but I am hoping that I might be “fixed”, at least as far as puzzling goes. I don’t need bells. Or whistles. Or even balloons. I wouldn’t turn down some cake, though!

Now, this post is already pretty long, but please indulge me a bit longer. I told you a little bit about me, but almost nothing about this awesome puzzle. I already told you that I started with the round face in the upper right corner. I finished that face and worked my way across to the left side, basically working the top half of the puzzle. When I had that finished, I moved on to the totem-looking faces in the lower right side and worked my way to the left side, leaving the one big tree with the two owls for last.

I can’t say that this puzzle was easy to do, but it wasn’t really hard, either. What it was, in retrospect, was demanding. By that I mean that it forced me to pay attention to it. There is a ton of colorful details in this puzzle, and after waiting probably more than a year, it was not going to settle for half of my attention. I think that under normal circumstances, I would have whipped this one together in two days. But I was happy that I needed more than two days with this puzzle. I needed that time to get to know it and to appreciate the gift that it truly was. We were slow dancing together and I can admit that I felt quite elated when we reached the end.

Speaking of the end, this happened when I connected both halves together. By the time I finished the puzzle, my weather decided to be uncooperative, making me wait until today to take my puzzle outside to take a decent photo of it. Seriously, after everything that I went through to get this one finished, I needed a photo that did it justice. Just look at the difference between my interior lighting and my completed photo!

Now, the nitty gritty. Hennessy Puzzles have random cut pieces with a semi-gloss finish. There was a bit of puzzle dust, but I am not a “digger”, so this didn’t bother me at all. The shapes made it easy to know that I had them in their right spot, and the fit was good enough that I could pick up the finished puzzle very carefully without losing any pieces. I didn’t lift it up high, but I could lift it completely off the board. I would recommend this puzzle to anyone, no matter what their experience level is. Advanced puzzlers will be able to get this one finished in a day or two, but a novice might need five days or more to complete it. I would recommend that you don’t try to do this one without using the box image or enclosed poster as there are simply so many little details to pay attention to. This puzzle is available for sale from the Hennessy website and Amazon.
