My Confident Newbie Difficulty Rating: Hard to Medium

Hard to Medium you might be asking. Well yes, my first impression was this puzzle would present some challenges. Except for the central train, there was so much similar background color. Then realizing how difficult it would be to comprehensively sort all those background map pieces, I was sure of it. So, I got totally negative about the whole prospect. This was not going to be any fun at all!

Quality: I started looking for reasons to bag it up. There was only one quality negative, and really not one big enough to warrant rejection. The box pic had more image on all four sides than the actual puzzle. Otherwise, this puzzle was perfect! The large sturdy box contained a sealed bag of pieces, no poster. But the cover pic was a true color match to the pieces, and more than large enough. There was no puzzle dust. Piece fit was pick up off the table tight. The pieces have a slight sheen that did not hinder puzzling at night with overhead / room light. No pieces were damaged in any way, none were together uncut, and none were missing.

Getting started: Find the edge pieces and sort by color. Oh yes, random cut puzzles present pieces with false edges, so that added more to my plight. But, I sorted as best I could, pulling the large train pieces, the dark and light smoke, the black inside the tunnel, the tracks, any pieces that looked to be part of the trains in the corners, and tray, after tray, after tray of map pieces. Then I built the frame . . .

Construction: Oh, the frame. First notice of the pic size discrepancy. Then, one missing piece in each of the top and bottom edges. Will they show up eventually or is it false fits? Why, oh why, am I subjecting myself to this? Of course it is because I hate to fail. But I was not enjoying the effort. So, I filled in the dark smoke at the top, then lined up the trays of big train pieces. Much to my surprise, that was going so well I decided to change my attitude. I reminded my self I actually liked random cut pieces. The train was done, and I had never bothered to line up the pieces by shape. Oh my goodness, I was having fun! I filled in the corner trains, the track, the tunnel — that took care of a lot of the background. There was still a lot left, but it didn’t feel like a hateful exercise anymore. And the finished puzzle — it’s quite a stunning illustration. I’m happy I stuck with it.

Final thoughts: So, it started out hard, but became medium as pieces kept falling into place. I have to admit I’m glad it was only 500 pieces, since that made it easier in the beginning to not give up. I don’t know why I turned against the puzzle so quickly — my favorite puzzling style is actually large areas of similar color — just my mood, I suppose. But when it all tuned around so quickly it doubled the fun. Puzzling is supposed to be just that - joyful. And it was.

My grades: Quality - A+ (the box pic wasn’t smaller than the puzzle), Fun Factor - grew to A+++
