My Confident Puzzler Difficulty Rating: Relaxingly Easy

This puzzle is one of seven realistic depictions of birds sold individually or as a set at a slightly reduced price. They are from the art produced at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. I don’t know very much about birds, so I went to the site, where I found a wealth of information. One section was called Seven Simple Actions to help Birds. Most of the seven titles were self explanatory, but this one was curious:

5. Drink Coffee That’s Good for Birds

The challenge: Three-quarters of the world’s coffee farms grow their plants in the sun (11), destroying forests that birds and other wildlife need for food and shelter. Sun- grown coffee also often requires using environmentally harmful pesticides and fertilizers. On the other hand, shade-grown coffee preserves a forest canopy that helps migratory birds survive the winter.

I guess I didn’t know that much about coffee either!

This puzzle is pretty and fun to put together. Yes, it’s only 100 pieces, but it still offers the benefits of the puzzling process - clearing the mind and creating calm. And, if there is only a short break in one’s day to get that, these puzzles are the answer!

Quality: One point away from A+ — loose piece fit* (see Final Thoughts). Not that much of an issue with so few pieces. Otherwise it comes in a very small, sturdy box. The full illustration is on the box top. Inside is a sealed bag of pieces. There was no puzzle dust. The solid pieces have the least bit of sheen. None were damaged or together uncut, none were missing.

Getting started: Find the edge pieces and sort by color. I found the edge pieces and just turned all the others face up.

Construction: Actually, I didn’t even build the frame first, offering a tad more challenge. I pieced together the bird, and basically just kept going. Okay — I did glance at the box. It didn’t take long to reach the edge and place frame pieces. I totally enjoyed every moment I spent doing this little gem.

Final Thoughts: So, the company calls these Mini puzzles, but they have a real presence when completed. There are even 9” x 7” frames available. *Because of the loose piece fit, they do need to be glued, or taped together from the back. I use 2” painters tape. If that’s the plan, piece the puzzle together on a small board to be able to put another on top to turn it over.
