My Confident Newbie Difficulty Rating:  Somewhat Advanced

Almost from the beginning of piecing this together, I was writing my review in my head. I must say the red dress dampened my enthusiasm, but in the end . . .

Quality: This is a beautiful puzzle. It is a dramatic illustration, with a meaningful message, and a satisfying puzzling experience when completed. There was only one quality issue, but it is an annoying one - loose piece fit. When picking up even 2 pieces, they would not stay together! Otherwise, no major faults to be found. The large, sturdy box has the full illustration on the top. Color match to pieces was excellent. A good thing, since inside there was a resealable bag of pieces but no poster. There was no puzzle dust. The pieces have some gloss, but they are solid, none were damaged in any way, none were together uncut, and none were missing.

Getting started: Find the edge pieces and sort by color. Sorting was quite straightforward. Along with sorting the yellow, turquoise, and blue background, I did sort out each dress design segment as a color. Also while sorting, I pulled the women’s head and upper torso features. After building the frame, those were the first areas I pieced together.

Construction: I started from the top and worked my way down. Once I had the women’s upper body and arms attached to sky and ocean, I left the remaining background to fill in as I went along and started working on the dresses.

This entire puzzle was worked piece by piece instead of trying to build sections. I did arrange the pieces by color and shape, but depended more on color and design. Here’s why - the vast majority of the pieces were the 2 in / 2 out variety. Only 2 other shapes were present and they were, shall I say, odd. One had 2 pointy corners and the other the mate to those. I found them, and married the pairs. And each time I picked them up, they got divorced. AARRGGHH!

So, the puzzle flowed together quite nicely. Ladies 1, 2 and 4 went together first. Lady 3 took more time, but I saw satisfying progress. I filled in the remaining background pieces and just stared at Lady 5. She was another story! This is my favorite puzzle style, large areas of similar color and / or design. I have even said in prior reviews that time is not an issue when piecing them. Every found and placed piece is a reward for time spent. So, maybe singling out the red dress might seem unwarranted, but trust me, it went beyond time consuming. Aside from the red pieces that were in place because they abutted other colors, there were over 100 pieces left. The repeating dragon design was just too complicated to assure a selected piece was correct; the only good clue was the 5 darker pleats. Picking out fat knobs and skinny legs, then trying piece after piece in the same spot, can get wearisome. And then, of course, almost all the piece shapes started to look exactly alike. I started testing each piece all around the dress. I had to just walk away too many times to count. Finally I told myself to depend on and get lost in the puzzling process. I finished, I felt accomplished. And in total, I truly enjoyed my time with this puzzle. And yes, I had fun!

Final thoughts: Somewhat advanced - let me explain. I think the areas of this puzzle are well defined, making sorting and piecing not that difficult for much of it. I don’t look at time as necessarily a measure of difficulty if progress is evident. I had completed 90% of this puzzle, so I was not going to lose my patience and bag it up. But I wouldn’t blame anyone who did. That red dress was frustrating to say the least.

My grades: Quality B+ (just one issue, but a big one), Fun Factor B+ (Darn the red dress!)
