My Confident Novice Difficulty Rating; Easy

Yes, I wished as a puzzle it was at least 500 pieces, but alas, I had to have this very curious illustration. Galison’s description - “a king and queen with flower heads” is not much help. Is there a hidden meaning? What is she holding? Let’s play what?? I don’t know, but it is so strange, as to be a compelling piece of art, as beautiful as it is odd. If it were to be framed, it should not be put under glass. The background is totally matte, all the subjects are shiny.

Oh, the flip side Galison says “A poker-faced spade on a game board”.  Okay — rather striking, but is it a game at all? The spade face looks female, six spaces with Roman numeral 7 - I give up. It is not a puzzle I would have bought on its own. For this design, the orange colored shapes are shiny. I will admit, I did not piece it together.

Quality: Superb! The box is sturdy and quite attractive, with the Royal Couple on the cover and wrapped around the sides ending with the striped border. It is taller than usual, so the top does not completely cover the box bottom. The game board design goes around the sides of and onto the box bottom. Inside, there is a sealed bag of pieces. Unlike other puzzles from Galison, there is no poster. One of the designs is printed on the inside of the box cover, the other inside the box bottom. There was virtually no puzzle dust. The very solid pieces are larger than average and 1/8” thick! None were stuck together uncut, none were damaged, none were missing. Piece fit was great. Not quite pick up perfect, but almost. I managed to carefully flip it over. There was one issue - false fits, but only with the frame.

Follow the mantra — find the edge pieces and sort by color. On its own, the frame would have been a tiny bit tricky to build given it was sections with just one of four colors; false fits added an annoying component and extra time. During the puzzle build, frame pieces had to be interchanged a couple times. Sorting the 4 colors of the background pretty much sorted all the objects in the design - easy peasy!

Construction: Um — 250 pieces, a delightfully pleasant, quick and fun build. I started with the lower right quadrant and worked up and around to the lower left. And then I studied the illustration. As a graphic designer, I can so appreciate the process the artist crafted to create it. Can you tell - I love this picture!

My grades: Quality A+ (1/8th inch thick pieces wins over false fits), Fun factor A+
