My Confident Newbie Difficulty Rating: Easy to Medium 

Yet again, I’m on the fence about the difficulty rating. For a seasoned puzzler, definitely easy. For a new puzzler, not so much. Yes, it is just 500 pieces, but a little on the busy side and random cut. Actually insane cut! Not that many traditional ones in the bunch! Some were teeny tiny, others just crazy!

Quality: Almost perfect. Loose piece fit makes moving sections very difficult. The box is attractive and very sturdy. Rather than shrink wrapped, there is a sleeve slid over the box.. It offers all the required info including a full puzzle pic. The box itself has a front flap opening and is covered with an overall map design. Inside, the pieces are in a disposable bag. A ziplock storage bag and a poster are also included. Color match of

illustrations to pieces is excellent. There was no puzzle dust. The sturdy pieces have a bit of sheen. None were together uncut or damaged, none were missing.

Getting started: Find the edge pieces and sort by color. That’s important and a good start. I went further and sorted the sun and clouds, the grass, the barn, the bread, and each animal while finding the edge pieces.

Construction: I built the frame. It offered s lot of color information. I put in the sun and clouds. Then I pieced together the big animals on letter size paper so i could move them into place without them breaking apart. It sounds easier than it is. Random cut pieces often have straight edges that are not edge pieces. And they can be more difficult to find where they fit in the puzzle. Also, with all my industrious sorting,

I still had some “mystery pieces” - ones, even using the illustration, that I could not tell exactly where they belonged.

Final thoughts: That said, this was such a fun puzzle to put together. It is so cute! I am not embarrassed to have done a puzzle based on a children’s story, although a child might have completed it more quickly. (Smile) The story of Little Red Hen offers a life lesson. A synopsis and characterizations of the animals is given on the back of the poster.

About the artist: Eric Dowdle travels the world taking pictures and sketching what ultimately turns into his beautiful, amazing, unique, often very intricate artwork. I truly admire his ability and style. This puzzle’s style was simple in comparison to the “busy” often presented in his vast array of subjects and locations. Probably why I chose it. “Busy” is my least favorite puzzle style.That in no way diminishes how much I enjoy looking at what he creates!

My grades: Quality A-, Fun Factor A+ (I actually like random cut)
