My Confident Puzzler Difficulty Rating: Moderate

The Liberty Company was founded in 1875. Their collection of iconic prints is now 50,000 strong. This puzzle illustration was hand painted, inspired by the silk scarf designs Liberty produces. The box is no less stunning. It looks and opens like a book, with a hidden magnetic closure. The “pages” are gilded and the inside is fully lined in a floral Liberty print paper. It’s a keepsake Wow!

Quality: The high end “book” is certainly excellent quality. Almost everything else as well, except for loose piece fit. The “book” cover is a deep purple with minimal gold metallic signage and the full illustration; that has metallic gold highlights as well. Inside is a sealed bag of pieces and, unfortunately, a very small illustration reference card. Color match pieces to illustrations was perfect. There was no puzzle dust. There were no false fits. The pieces have some sheen, some are embellished with metallic gold. None were damaged or together uncut, and none were missing.

Getting started: Find the edge pieces and sort by color. Sorting by color will accomplish a lot, but of course I had to do more! I sorted the burgundy signage, the pink signage (LIBERTY separately), the green corner edged in gold, the pink corner edged in gold, the striped arc, the 4 green areas edged in white, each area with the light blue background, the 2 designs with the star tips, the moon, the sun, the flowers in the lower right corner, and any left over navy pieces with odd bits. I also sorted separately any pieces that fit into the frame. They were very easy to find - they all had red striping on them.

Construction: I wondered about false fits, but decided to build the frame first once I thought of what I could do next. The frame had no color information other than the light blue, dark blue, and black stripes, so it took some time. ( I have a hint - I’ll put it at the very end of this review in case you want to skip it.). Then I put in those sorted pieces that would fit into the frame. Doing that piecing second added a lot of color information and was a great beginning to the build. I arranged some of the sorts by shape, but mostly went by color. A few small sections got put together during the sorting, but of course they feel apart. Continuing the build, I put together the striped arc. Then I filled in the corners and the remaining patterned areas, objects, and odd bits. The lettering came next and I left the sun for last just because - so pretty!

Final thoughts: My moderate rating has more to do with time spent than any big challenge this puzzle presented. The areas were certainly well defined. But the frame and the patterns took time. Still, in total I think the way I handled the build order worked well. I saw nothing but progress once the frame and the mates to it were in place. This was a satisfying and enjoyable build, and quite a bit of fun.

My grades: Quality A- (despite the lovely “book” presentation, loose piece fit is a pain), Fun Factor A+.

HINT: The light blue outer border of the frame is a somewhat different width on each side.
