My (advancing) Newbie Difficulty Rating: maybe a little harder than easy

According to Galison “Mosaic Hall . . . highlights the ornate exterior columns of the Palau de la Musica Catalana, a UNESCO Heritage site in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. And yes, flamingos are a common site in Spain!” So that answers that!

This was a perfect picture for a puzzle — just look at all the details! Now look again. A satisfying puzzling experience could all be in the sorting. First I turned over all the pieces and found the edge pieces. Then I sorted out every column. I sorted the middle in thirds, I sorted the flamingo, I sorted the gargoyles atop the columns. Then I built the frame and worked the puzzle in from the left and right edges.

I hear you saying “this is a crazy person!”, but really, every area is quite distinctive, the pieces were not hard to sort. No, I didn’t get every one in the correct tray, but very close. So, tray by tray I laid out the pieces by shape and started working — er, having fun.

Yes, the sorting took time, and the puzzle wasn’t done in a few hours either. I don’t actually pay attention to the clock. I take a lot of breaks, I may do other chores, food and coffee are required. All I know is I saw nothing but progress putting this puzzle together - that’s all I really look for.

So, it works for me. I hear the expression about constructing and completing a puzzle - “making order out of chaos.” I make as much order as I can before the construction begins. It’s just my nature, but it may not be for everyone. I’ve watched a lot of YouTube puzzler videos. Many people hunt and peck out of the box without doing any sorting. Those who sort by color find the edge pieces and finish a 1000 piece sort in 20 minutes. Okay, I wish I were faster, I’m not terribly fond of sorting. But it is my way of making the puzzling process as much fun as possible.

I loved this puzzle as soon as I saw it — so pretty, so unexpected. This is the fifth Galison puzzle I have done, the quality has been mostly top notch. The small, sturdy box contains a poster and a sealed bag of pieces. The cover and poster are an excellent color match to the puzzle. The pieces are also sturdy. They have a slight sheen. The piece fit was a little loose, but I wasn’t building large sections to move and place, so not terribly annoying. No puzzle dust. No pieces were broken, separating, or connected un cut, and none were missing.

And who doesn’t love a flamingo?
