My Confident Newbie Difficulty Rating: Surprisingly easy to moderate (see * below)

I had to have this puzzle! I grew up in the suburbs of Boston in the 1950’s. Sports were a big deal, “Go Sox” was everywhere. I start a new hobby about 9 months ago, go shopping for puzzles and find this — what can I say? I don’t really follow sports now, but it was the nostalgia thing. It made me smile.

What I originally thought: 550 pieces doesn’t necessarily mean easy, it just means you will get to the finish faster. This one looked challenging. All that tiny text, and the huge stylized photo with the blurred background — this will at best take some time. Wrong! It took me no time to piece it together. Preparation, though, was key, and that did take a while . . .

Getting started: Find the edge pieces and sort by color. Hmmm — that sort by color part won’t work. In other puzzles I do follow the mantra, build the frame and then sub sort out areas of the puzzle, shades of color, etc. Here all I would have was maybe 4 piles — the 7 photos mixed up, the largest text, the larger text, and all that other text. Since it was only 550 pieces, I decided I didn’t want to go through the sub sorting of the sort. So, while finding the edge pieces, I sorted the puzzle into 11 sections and pieced together what I could, including much of the text. I got lazy toward the end, so there was a tray of text pieces without a home, but that was minor.*All that was the key to surprisingly easy

Construction: When the sort was complete I built the frame. There was a lot of useful information on it for attaching everything that was pieced together. Then I filled in holes in the right column and everything below the big photo. The rest had been pieced during the sort. All that was left was the big photo. I did sort out those pieces — the grass, the sharp foreground pieces, recognizable areas of the background. Once those were placed, I sorted the rest by piece shape - the photo was done fairly quickly. The puzzle was perfect!

Perfect you ask? Yes! What I thought might be arduous turned out to be a lot of fun, It brought back some happy memories, it was quite a different subject and illustration from other puzzles I had done — a complete puzzling package! And to top that off . . .

Quality: Full disclosure here . . . there was . . . a lot of puzzle dust. It can be overlooked as far as I’m concerned. Everything else was perfect! The highlight being the pick up off the table tight piece fit. The sturdy pieces have a bit of sheen, they were a comfortable size, none were together uncut, and none were missing. Some of the blue backing was hanging from a few of the pieces, none were broken or splitting apart. The box is sturdy but oversized, the box pic is complete, the color match to the pieces is great, the sealed bag of pieces is not reusable, there is no additional poster. Oh no — a few negatives there — sorry, I’m not taking off any points. This puzzle was just too entertaining, too satisfying, too much fun!!!

My grades: Quality A+, Fun Factor A+
