My Confident Newbie Difficulty Rating:  Easy to Medium

This contemporary graphic illustration of a fantastical miniature tree would be lovely framed. I wasn’t sure I would enjoy piecing it together. All those leaves, multiple instances of each of the 7 flower designs - could be tricky and time consuming. It looked “busy”, my least favorite style. It kept falling to the bottom of my stash, but I’m glad i decided to finally try it.

Quality: The best! The sturdy, medium sized, attractive box has a full picture on the top. Inside is a disposable bag of pieces and a puzzle sized poster. Color match pictures to pieces is excellent. There was no puzzle dust. The sturdy pieces have very low sheen. None were damaged, none were together uncut, and none were missing. Piece fit was pick up off the table tight. Everything that makes for happy puzzling!

Getting started: Find the edge pieces and sort by color. Okay - green, orange, yellow, brown, gold, purple, white, black, and the colorful container. Hmmm — sub-sorting will definitely be required. I did not build the frame first (see more in Construction), but I sorted out the following: Each flower design: the multiples in a tray for each design. Green leaves: one color, two color, each of those with stems and without. Brown bark: the tree trunk and larger branches. Black: the ones that were solid or mostly all black, but otherwise black was everywhere! Now I was ready for the build.

Construction: Is all that sub-sorting necessary? Maybe no for a 500 piece puzzle, but why not? The construction flowed so comfortably it was just 100% fun. I built only the bottom edge and up the first few side rows of the frame.* Then put in the table and the container. I pieced together each flower except for those brown spotted ones, placed them where they might go, then filled in connection pieces. Oh yes, there were a lot of leaves and stems still to go! I continued until all that was left were frame pieces. And then, it was complete!

Final thoughts: Relatively speaking, I thought this was pretty easy, but without all that sorting, medium seems a fair difficulty rating. Not that I really like sorting, I’m a super sorter by choice because it benefits the construction. More satisfaction, more fun! I have been at this hobby for a year now, and know my favorite style is puzzles with large areas of similar color and / or design. They take no more time than “busy” ones, I just enjoy the process more.

Petals was a puzzle I bought early on, that probably would not be drawn to now - especially if it was 1000 pieces. The one to the left was another - 1000 pieces (Gibsons Lift the Lid Department Store). So many pieces had multiple colors - sorting was not straightforward for those. Still, about halfway through, I said to myself “ this is fun!”. Maybe I should take a chance on more “busy” puzzles . . . Um, maybe not.

My grades: Quality A+, Fun Factor A+

* I have seen other puzzlers complain about false fits in Cloudberries puzzles. I found none here, but with so much of the frame being black, and having encountered that issue in another Cloudberries puzzle (Rooster, 1000 pieces), I decided to wait.
