My Confident Puzzler Difficulty Rating: Medium

The story: “The Flammarion engraving depicts a legendary scene, but the illustration’s origins have collected their own series of myths. The first documented appearance of the Flammarion engraving is in the 1888 L’atmosphère: météorologie populaire (The atmosphere: popular meteorology) by Camille Flammarion. Little is known definitively about the engraving aside from its original caption: “A missionary of the Middle Ages tells that he had found the point where the sky and the Earth touch.” Inspiringly, many have interpreted the image, reproduced in color on this 500-piece puzzle, as a quest for knowledge.” (The original top and bottom borders, including the caption, have been left off the puzzle illustration. The full engraving is on the box bottom.)

Quality: Very good. Piece fit was not annoyingly loose, but puzzle pick up was a fail. The average size sturdy box has the full puzzle graphic on the top. Color match to pieces was excellent. Inside was a sealed bag of pieces. There was no poster. There was quite a bit of puzzle dust. The vibrant, solid pieces have a matte finish. None were damaged or together uncut; none were missing.

Getting started: Find the edge pieces and sort by color. My first thought was the areas of color were distinct enough that a color sort would have this puzzle go easily and relatively quickly. I did sub sort out the sun and its glow, the tree trunk, the little village on the water, the missionary, the three red flowers, the three shades of sky, and the dark division curve from bottom left to top center. I began to question my initial assessment . . .

Construction: I built the frame first. Then I found the pieces that finished the inside width of the frame’s side panels. In truth, it all was pretty straightforward until it was time for the sky with all those lines and stars. That was truly an exercise in patience and concentration. (Hence my “medium” difficulty rating.)

Final thoughts: In total this puzzle was very satisfying fun, due in large part to my exacting sorting. And the finished product is such a curious image — perhaps the ultimate example of “sticking ones nose where it doesn’t belong”.

My grades: Quality A, Fun factor A+
