My (advancing) Newbie difficulty rating: easy
Quilted With Love, puzzled with some quality issues. Up front I have to say they were annoyances but really did not affect how much fun this puzzle was to construct. That, I must say, rather surprised me. Here’s the rundown . . .
Quality: The sturdy but oversized box contains only a non-resealable bag of pieces; there is no poster. The box pic is full size and has a very good color match to the pieces. There was minimal puzzle dust. The problems were all about the pieces. There must have been a cutting issue. No pieces were together uncut, just a few were stuck together at all, but many pieces had backing hanging from another piece or ripped and hanging on itself. The other issue was piece fit. In many instances I had to force correct pieces into place. At the same time, the fit was too loose to pick up sections. AARRGGHH! Yes, annoying.
Follow the puzzling mantra - find the edge pieces and sort by color. Well, I didn’t do that. I couldn’t see a color sort being that useful, so while finding the edges I sorted the windows, and the quilts on the back wall. The rest got sorted by areas in the puzzle: left side, sewing machine areas, stairway, right side and the table area. After building the frame I sub-sorted out wood with no other colors, wood with color, floor, chairs, the green table cloth, and the fabrics in the lower right. One quilt (the country scene) and a few random pieces got built during the sorting. Yes, it takes more time, but it is what works for me.
The frame provided starting points galore, so I began piecing. I am a slow puzzler, so no, this wasn’t finished in an afternoon, but it went together almost effortlessly. The last pieces were the chairs, the wood with color (many were already found while placing pieces in other areas), and yes, a lot of wood. But again, for me that final process went with ease.
So, why was I surprised? A few reasons - I was surprised I even liked this image. I do not quilt or sew, and I prefer illustrations with large areas of similar color and little “busy-ness”. Admittedly, this illustration wasn’t as busy as some, but it still had a lot going on. Even so, I saw it and just wanted to do it. It happened to be one with oversized pieces, and I eventually wanted to try one, but I was taken with the picture above all of that. I’m a city girl. A country quilt emporium — go figure.
I was also surprised that I didn’t particularly like that the pieces were bigger. Nothing about them added to the fun. Sure, easier to handle, but I don’t have any issue with a typical 1000 piece puzzle’s piece size. In the end, I still needed to put together 1000 pieces (none were missing), the dimensions are bigger than the size of a typical 1500 piece puzzle, there was no room on my table for the sorting trays. Well, I did one, I needn’t do another. I suppose when I do my next regular sized 1000 piece puzzle, the pieces will seem rather minuscule at first.
I was also surprised that this random cut puzzle felt more like a ribbon cut one. So many of the pieces, although perhaps distorted, were more typical in shape to those we are more familiar with.
The greatest surprise was how easily this went together and how much fun I had doing a puzzle that isn’t my “style”. I might just have to buy more, or at least be less reluctant to do the ones in my stash purchased before I knew what my “style” was!
Can I recommend this puzzle? A qualified yes. Factory cut and piece fit are pretty big deals. My experience might be a one off. Otherwise, fun is a hard thing to reject!
My grades: Quality B-, Fun Factor A+
