My Confident Newbie Difficulty rating: Satisfyingly Easy

A quick, relaxing, just fun, little puzzling moment! Everything about it was perfect except if . . .

Quality: . . . a pristine box is important. All Buffalo Games puzzles are packaged with the environment in mind. The sturdy, small, square box has no shrink wrap. Inside the pieces are loose, no plastic bag. To keep them contained, the top and bottom sides of the box are glued together. Even splitting that apart with care, some of the cardboard is damaged; it does not show when the box is closed. Otherwise, the quality is excellent. The full illustration is on the box top and a full size poster is included. Color match illustrations to pieces is great! There was no puzzle dust. The pieces are solid and have modest sheen. None were damaged or together uncut, and none were missing. Piece fit was pick up off the table tight.

Getting started: Find the edge pieces and sort by color. With this design, sorting by color sorted the rows of animals. I also sorted out the second row of frame pieces.

Construction: I built the frame and added that second row. There was enough color information to more than get started. I put in the rows of animals, building up from the bottom. In no time, this colorful little puzzle was complete. It could look adorable in a baby’s room. I know, I know, only 300 pieces and the simplest of designs doesn’t offer the joy of completing a challenge, but does that really have to be part of every puzzling experience? I say no — the mechanical process of puzzling puts the mind at rest and offers calm. It’s a chance to regroup. It’s a gift!

Final thoughts: Buffalo Games has a huge selection of puzzles, covering several unique themes. I have done many of them. The Quality described above applies to all but one, which had a missing piece. Although their replacement policy does not offer sending the same puzzle, they provide a list of puzzles from which to choose. The list includes games ranging from 300 to 2000 pieces. No matter the piece count of the problem puzzle, you can choose any one from the list. I filled out a simple form, provided a photo of the finished problem puzzle, picked a 1000 piece puzzle to replace the 300 piece one, and it arrived within 2 weeks. I think the policy is pretty fair. True, I cannot gift, donate or trade a used puzzle with a missing piece, but I have rarely replayed any of the perfect ones I own. I mention all that because, in my opinion, these very competitively priced puzzles match up or even better more expensive, well touted brands. I have pieced several of those together and they suffer from loose piece fit over and over again. In short, I recommend this brand.

My grades: Quality A+ (I’m not bothered by the minor box damage), Fun Factor A++
