Have you ever had that one puzzle that you just knew that you would love? I have had this puzzle in my possession for almost exactly a year before I finally brought it out to play with, and, boy, was it ever worth the wait! I loved getting to know this beauty from the first piece to the last! Today marks the anniversary date of buying this puzzle, so it is perfect that today is the day that I can share it with you.

I love the art of Rex Ray, and have done one other puzzle from his paintings, and I own a few other puzzles of his work including a brand new puzzle that was released this year. His artwork might not appeal to everyone, but to me, he was an artistic genius! Sadly, this graphic designer and collage artist died in 2015, but he left behind an impressive body of work that speaks to my heart.

The title of this puzzle is simply “Rex Ray”, but a little bit of research revealed that the title of this piece of work is called “Clandina II”. I will include a photo of the actual piece of art. This print was created in 2012, measures 29” x 59.5”, and was a numbered edition of 25 prints. The plethora of details and the slight variations in color or texture made this artwork a joy to assemble.

I started in my typical way, with spreading out all of the pieces on two pieces of foam core boards, but I was too impatient to get started that I put my first pieces together before I finished that tedious task, lol. (See my third photo to see how early I abandoned this task.) I eventually did get all of the loose pieces spread out, and continued building on my starting point of the lower left corner. I worked from the left side to the right, trying my best to get any solid background pieces in place as I went along. There were at least three different pieces that I swore had to be missing, but they were hiding in plain sight.

Because this is a panoramic puzzle, measuring 32” x 16” (81.3cm x 40.6cm), I needed to assemble it on two separate boards. I put in the last piece at night, so I was pleasantly surprised to see the sun shining today. I carried both of my puzzle boards outside in the lee of our house, and carefully connected the two sections together. It took about 20-30 photos to get one good one where all four sides looked more or less even minus any errant cat tails or bits of leaves blowing around. I even tried to take a few panoramic photos, but I don’t have a steady enough hand to get a photo that I would be willing to share. I did take a video, though, giving you a closer view of this gorgeous puzzle. In the end, I was sad that it was finished already, but I already have my next puzzle on deck, so I will keep this one in case I get a chance to do it again.

This was a quality puzzle with sturdy grid cut pieces with a matte finish. The cut was excellent with practically zero puzzle dust, no cut issues, no delamination, no damaged or missing pieces. There were only a handful of pieces that fit in more than one spot, but I quickly determined that I had them in the wrong place when I had exhausted all potential adjoining pieces. The pieces came in a thick reusable ziplock bag, which I really appreciate, and even though there was no poster, you didn’t need it because the artwork is printed on the box top without anything covering up small bits of the image. I would highly recommend this puzzle to anyone of any experience level.
