Puzzling With My Mom, # 1, 2023

Woohoo! We FINALLY got a chance to do some puzzling after a long absence! Not only was this the first puzzle of the new year, it was also the first puzzle done in our new house. I left the puzzle selection up to Mom, giving her a choice between 9 puzzles that were the easiest to get to, lol. Our puzzle stash is still mainly in moving boxes stacked up in our future puzzle room, but these 9 puzzles were bought more recently and waiting on top of our boxes and boxes and boxes of puzzles.

This folk art inspired puzzle was the perfect choice. It offered a great design, well cut pieces, a nice balance between easy and challenging, and offered an obvious division of assignments. For once, I jumped in and told Mom that I was going to do the rooster, the mighty male of the species who is so full of himself with his bright colors and flamboyant tail feathers! Mom would get to assemble everything else. She was fine with her role, although I have to say that I probably got the easy part of this arrangement. Mom ended up doing the rooster’s feet when she did the dandelions under him, and I ended up doing the curvy leaf part of the design in bottom right corner and the majority of the border, but otherwise we stayed in our own lanes.

I have to say that I have not done very many Cloudberries puzzles, and I have to change that. I own more in my puzzle stash, but finding them would take several hours of combing through the three rows of boxes. They would be worth the effort, though I would likely get distracted by other puzzles before finding them, lol. The puzzles from this company are fantastic! I am serious! The pieces are so thick and sturdy that you just want to hold them in your hand longer than necessary before finally putting them into place. The pieces will sometimes fit in more than one spot, but there is a definite distinction between a wrong spot and the right one. I did get tricked by the puzzle once when I was doing the border, though. When I went to attach a long section to my completed rooster, I realized that one side was almost double the height. I quickly found my mistake and finished the rest of the border without trouble.

The pieces are grid cut, with virtually no puzzle dust. The pieces were well cut with no conjoined pieces and there were no missing pieces, although the company includes a little note that assures you that any manufacturing issues would be immediately resolved. Cloudberries is a company based in the UK, specifically London, but the puzzles are made in the Netherlands. The note from the company says that their puzzles are “sustainably sourced, expertly cut, and designed to be the best.” I can attest to the expertly cut! Oh, and I almost forgot to mention the poster! There is a life size poster included! It actually was a bit too large for me, but for those of you who enjoy picking up a random piece, finding its spot from the image and placing it close to where you imagined it will go, I would think that you could assemble the puzzle right on top of the puzzle.

The puzzle image was created by Printer Johnson according to the box details. A quick google search led me to the artistic team of Vicki Johnson (the business owner and designer), Meredith Adams (a local ceramicist who seems to be Vicki’s right hand man, so to speak), and Toby Rampton (a freelance illustrator and printer and new addition to the company). While I was browsing through their website, I saw several other images that I would love to have made into puzzles!

Mom and I will be doing more puzzles, hopefully sooner than our recent 6 month hiatus, but first we need to take down our Christmas tree and pack away all of our Christmas decorations, a process that will take more than a few days. I hope to be able to do a bit of puzzling in the evenings, but we also need to squeeze in some nap times and lazy mornings spent reading in bed! I hope to post again soon, but know that we have missed engaging with you! I feel bad that we have largely ignored Mom’s fans, but we were busy nesting and merging our households and our design aesthetics. Once we get back into puzzling shape, and I can assure you that my back has made me aware how out of shape I have become, I should be posting more regularly. Thanks for coming along on our puzzle journey!
