My Confident Puzzler Difficulty Rating: Between Easy and Medium

Beautiful, magical and curious - I so much enjoyed watching it come together. This is Vogue’s Spring, 1914, Millinery edition. Maybe the mystery creature is delivering a hat pin. In any case, I just keep admiring this stunning illustration. From the box description: “Fashionably attired in a high-waisted Poiret-style dress, green hat resting on her knee, she raises her arm to the hovering magnificence of a fantastical harbinger of spring.” The artist, George Wolfe Plank, designed some of Vogue’s most whimsical covers; this one noted as the best known.

Quality: Quite good. I often complain about loose piece fit from this company. The fit here was not quite pick up perfect, but way better than usual. The medium size, sturdy box has the full illustration on the top. Inside was only a sealed bag of pieces. There was noticeable puzzle dust. The solid, well sized pieces have a virtually matte finish. Color match to the cover image was excellent. No pieces were damaged or together uncut and none were missing.

Getting started: Find the edge pieces and sort by color. I did a very deliberate sort: the grass, the water, the dress, the plain pinky beige sky, the pinky beige sky with tree parts, the plain blue sky, the blue sky with tree parts, the tree trunk, the parts of the mystical creature, the lady’s arms, hands, head, torso and hat, and the bunny. I also sorted out a tray of any pieces that had part of the inner black border.

Construction: I built the frame first then added the aforementioned pieces that attached to the inner frame. Then I continued piecing the grass, water, bunny, lady and creature. I did not build sections, my sorts made it relatively simple to go pierce by piece. Next was the shades of blue sky with and without tree parts. Even with that, I had little need to lay out the pieces by shape. Oh the pinky beige - it is a third of the puzzle, most of which was plain. I laid them all out by shape. Filling them in took a lot of time and concentration, and my reason for the medium difficulty rating. If one is unfamiliar with or not fond of random cut, they do offer a certain challenge. This insane sorter actually likes them. This company produces ribbon cut as well, so one never knows until the bag of pieces is examined.

Finals thoughts: Thank goodness puzzling is an activity open to anyone’s style. I spend the time to sort as described because it makes the construction so much more enjoyable. I feel more confident that I will see progress and limit frustration. It is, when all is said and done, supposed to be fun. This puzzle was assuredly that!

My grades: Quality A, Fun Factor A+
