Oh Boy! I purchased this puzzle and matching tray because I thought it would work well while I was recuperating in the hospital following some surgery. Sort of. True, the puzzle sits nicely in the tray. However, it is still necessary to have some workspace to lay out the pieces. A typical hospital table that slides over the bed is barely adequate.

Quality: As for this copy of World Pieces I received - there were 11 duplicate pieces. Since I pulled out the frame pieces first, I knew from the start the puzzle would never be complete. This is so unusual for a Dowdle Puzzle, and in this instance, so disappointing! I know - only 210 pieces, but the illustration was not a simple one. I counted all the pieces. There were more than 210, so I did proceed. As you can see, I came up a bit short — 3 edge pieces and 6 inside pieces were missing.

That aside, there is something to be said for the sturdy, attractive, magnetic flap closure box. Inside the pieces are in a resealable ziplock bag, and a letter size poster is included. Color match poster to pieces is excellent. Unfortunately, unlike other Dowdle posters, this one did not have the landmarks numbered and descriptions of each on the back side. There was no puzzle dust. The pieces are solid. None were damaged.

Getting Started: Find the edge pieces and sort by color. I did not really sort. I laid out all the pieces face up. Pulled the second row of mountains and bits of sky, dark blue water, beachy sand, the large sail boats, noticeable landmarks like the Sydney opera house, St. Louis arch, etc.

Construction: Eventually it all (well almost all) went together. I tried hard to ignore the missing piece problems. It was tricky enough to offer some rewarding fun. Hence the easy to medium rating.

Final thoughts: I would say the tray is only somewhat more than a marketing gimmick. It does make moving an incomplete puzzle handy when other things are brought to your hospital bed that need attention. Special care has to be given to the loose pieces. If you are home, and want to take advantage of being able to move the puzzle and sorted pieces, you need a large foam board under the whole project. So why have a tray? No, I do not think the whole thing is that great an idea. Would I recommend the line of Dowdle personal puzzles? Sure. I have done other puzzles from this company. The puzzle I received clearly was a disappointment but does not reflect the norm. They are very proud of their product and their goal: “to tell stories that inspire people to live meaningful and engaged lives. I believe in the worth of the individual. To me there are NO MISSING PIECES.” - - Eric Dowdle

My Grades: Quality C-, Fun Factor B- (could have been A-)

Addendum: I wrote a note to Dowdle explaining my disappointment given how impressed I was with the other Dowdle puzzles I own. I did not ask for a replacement. I didn’t even give any personal info beyond my name. A couple days ago another copy of personal size World Pieces arrived at my door. I called to thank them. The customer service person who answered was the person who read my note. It felt good to explain again and thank someone in person. Customer service to the extreme!!!
