Pieces: 1000

Size: 26.625" x 19.25"

The Bicycle image by Mary Lake-Thompson has the Lyrics from the song Bicycle Race by Queen running all along the border in a light grey text however I don't think that's what made the border challenging....I surely do like the song so below is  the YouTube video with the lyrics if you care to listen and sing along :)

Song Title: Bicycle Race

Bicycle, bicycle, bicycle
I want to ride my bicycle, bicycle, bicycle
I want to ride my bicycle
I want to ride my bike
I want to ride my bicycle
I want to ride it where I like

You say black, I say white
You say bark, I say bite
You say shark, I say hey man
Jaws was never my scene
And I don't like Star Wars

You say Rolls, I say Royce
You say God give me a choice
You say Lord, I say Christ
I don't believe in Peter Pan
Frankenstein or Superman
All I wanna do is

Bicycle, bicycle, bicycle
I want to ride my bicycle, bicycle, bicycle
I want to ride my bicycle
I want to ride my bike
I want to ride my bicycle
I want to ride my bicycle, races are coming your way

So forget all your duties, oh yeah
Fat bottomed girls, they'll be riding today
So look out for those beauties, oh yeah

On your marks, get set, go

Bicycle race, bicycle race, bicycle race
Bicycle, bicycle, bicycle
I want to ride my bicycle, bicycle, bicycle, bicycle
(I want a) bicycle race

You say coke, I say 'caine
You say John, I say Wayne
Hot dog, I say cool it man
I don't wanna be the President of America

You say smile, I say cheese
Cartier, I say please
Income tax, I say Jesus
I don't wanna be a candidate
For Vietnam or Watergate
'Cause all I want to do is

Bicycle, bicycle, bicycle
I want to ride my bicycle, bicycle (c'mon), bicycle
I want to ride my bicycle
I want to ride my bike
I want to ride my bicycle
I want to ride it where I like

  • Freddie Mercury wrote this in France after watching the Tour de France bicycle race ride by his hotel. The band were recording Jazz in the French countryside mainly as a tax break - Roger Taylor claimed in the Days of our Lives documentary that they were being taxed as much as 98% on royalties on previous albums, hence why they defected to France and later Montreux in Switzerland to record future albums.
  • This was released as a double A-side single with "Fat Bottomed Girls." They ran back to back on the album, and many radio stations played them together. The "Fat Bottomed Girls" are mentioned in this song's lyrics.
  • Wherever Queen played, bicycle shops sold out of bells bought by fans who brought them to the show to ring them during this song.
  • Queen staged a bicycle race around Wimbledon stadium in England to promote the single. Sixty-five professional models were hired to race nude, with special effects hiding the nudity in the original video; a photo from the race was used on the cover of the single and images from the race were used for the video.

Queen rented 65 bicycles for the race. In a possibly apocryphal but often-repeated story, when the rental company found out what they were used for, they refused to take the bikes back unless the band paid for new seats.

I did my usual sorting routine.

  1. Sorting to locate all  the outside border pieces, while....
  2. Placing the pieces into the 'general-color' piles.
  3. Then I carried on with a second round of sorting (similar colors sorted by shades/patterns) while placing the pieces flat out on the poster boards.

After I managed to work the border which took the longest time for the whole puzzle. I chose to start with the 3 purple bikes, then the pink-coral bikes, onto the greens and leaving the yellows for last - besides the 'main' bicycle word. There are a lot of fun little details to be seen when assembling it but no areas were as challenging as the border.

Looking at the work-in-progress image below you can see the fragments of the individual Bicycles forming into the jigsaw puzzle image. There are many wonderful little details added to each collage and some are seasonal orientated too!

Looking at the images below you can see the finer details and the random cut pieces. This puzzle was a perfect cut too as the pieces fit nice and snug. I was quite attracted to the Doxie in the Lavender bike. The creativity here is quite delightful!

I thought this whole puzzle was going to be testy....turns out the border was the tricky part. After that the rest of the puzzle was smooth sailing from start to finish. And I should mention VERY addictive!

The cut and quality of this Cobble Hill jigsaw puzzles was excellent rating this one as a perfect puzzle experience.

Mary Lake-Thompson's Bicycles are set in seasonal themes ready for life's adventures. There are many jigsaw puzzle produced by this Artist.

I can easily and highly recommend this jigsaw puzzle even for novice puzzlers. The border maybe tricky but it can always be completed last as the rest of the puzzle is pure pleasure!

The above jigsaw puzzle(s) have been added to my Puzzle Hobby Tracker

I am in the process of recording all my past jigsaw puzzles that I still have for my walls and all my current puzzles.
